“I HAVE A STRONG SENSE OF CAMARADERIE – I ALWAYS DO WHAT I CAN TO SUPPORT MY TEAMMATES & CLIENTS.”
Based in our Private Client team, Tom Purves is an Assistant Manager. He has a portfolio of clients for whom he prepares accounts and tax returns, arranges payments, and handles other administrative responsibilities.
Clients can always expect Tom to be honest and solution-oriented. Developing strong relationships with clients that are professional but friendly as well is one of Tom’s top priorities. He always ensures that clients can trust him with any worries, queries, or questions they may have, and that they know he’ll listen and respond with care.
MUTUAL TRUST & FRIENDLINESS
“For me, the ideal relationship with a client is one where we are both efficient, with a mutual trust between both parties. It’s also important that we’re able to have fun and be friendly – I find it makes for a stronger relationship if we can also chat about things other than business.”
HONESTY IS KEY
“Besides our expertise, of course, I think that above all clients expect honesty from us. They need to be able to trust that we’ll always tell them our honest and genuine opinion, and not shy away from any potentially difficult conversations that might need to be had. But clients can always rely on us to conduct any tricky conversation with care and consideration.”
DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS
“I find that the most satisfying aspect of working with clients is developing a long-term relationship with them; getting to know them and their families, and contributing to their life in a fun but professional way. It’s important to be able to be able to blend professionalism with friendliness – that’s how you build a really solid relationship based on trust and approachability. I think I’m quite a sociable person, so developing longstanding relationships with clients is one of my favourite aspects of the work that I do.
Similarly, for working with colleagues, the most satisfying thing for me is building really strong relationships and friendships, as well as doing whatever I can to support colleagues to develop and grow in their roles. I always aim to make team members feel supported and try to ensure that they know they can approach me with any concerns, questions, or issues.”
A PERSONAL TOUCH
“Whilst I believe the virtual route of working with clients is important for the appropriate clientele – and for some more than others – I still believe a more ‘hands-on’, personal touch of meeting clients and speaking with them perhaps over the phone is essential for client development.”
EVERCHANGING LEGISLATION
“I think that everchanging legislation and trends is the most difficult hurdle in my specialist areas. However, we find ways to always keep up to date with any changes that are enacted, and everyone on the team always helps each other to stay on top of it all and put the changes into practice.”
THE BENEFITS OF JOINING AAB GROUP
“The thing that excites me most about the future is my development through the firm with opportunities that are available to me. Having joined AAB Group, there are now more opportunities for the team to expand our expertise and broaden our experience. We are able to share knowledge between colleagues in other offices across the UK and across all the various service lines and sectors that we can offer now. This helps all of us to keep improving our processes and discovering the best ways of doing things.
It’s a really exciting time for Sagars generally – now that we’ve gone from being a medium-sized firm into a firm that can offer a wide array of services and expertise, our clients are really benefiting.”
POSITIVITY & ENTHUSIASM
“One of the AAB Group Values is that ‘we have an ethos of positivity, enthusiasm, and fun’, and I really believe that it is important to be all of these things when working in a professional environment. We work in quite an open-plan office, which encourages togetherness and chatting, and allows us to bring and foster that positivity, enthusiasm, and fun. This then in turn allows us to deliver this ethos to clients and build it into the foundations of our relationships with them.”
TEAMWORK & CAMARADERIE
“I think one of the greatest strengths I bring to Sagars is my positivity – being positive and showing enthusiasm is also how I am able to juggle work and manage deadlines whilst delivering a really good end product. I also bring all the knowledge and experience I’ve gained, which allows me not only to help my clients but also help to train and develop more junior members of the team, answering any questions they might have. In a similar vein, I think my other main strength is my sense of camaraderie – I’ll always do what I can to support my teammates in whatever way they might need, and they do the same for me.”
MAKING CLIENTS FEEL COMFORTABLE
“Probably the greatest compliment a client has paid me is that I’ve transformed the way he thinks about tax and that I’ve made him comfortable with his tax needs. That meant a lot to me, as it’s one of the things I try very hard to do with clients. It’s important to be able to explain things in such a way that the client understands, and it’s absolutely crucial that they feel completely at ease in talking to us about any issues or asking any questions at all.”
